• Mangroves occur where there is little wave action and sediments accumulate
• Mangrove Zonation

  • Seaward - Avicennia and Sonneratia
  • Sediment accumulation between pneumatophores
  • Landward - Rhizophora
  • Knee roots compact sediment
  • Create anoxic, carbon rich sediment
  • Precocious, producing fruits and flowers year round
• Rhizophera can be planted more seaward, leading to a large increase of encrustment on the roots

  • Also leads to encroachment upon seagrass communities
