Hierarchical Taxonomic System of Species

Cards (12)

  • The current taxonomic law has 8 levels in its hierarchy:
    1. domain
    2. kingdom
    3. phylum
    4. class
    5. order
    6. family
    7. genus
    8. species
  • Taxonomy (which literally means "arrangement law") is the science of classifying organisms to construct internationally shared classification systems with each organism placed into more and more inclusive groupings
  • This organization from larger to smaller, more specific categories, is called a hierarchical system
  • Taxonomic hierarchy is the process of arranging various organisms into a succesive levels of the biological classification
  • Carollus Linnaeus (May 23, 1707-January 10, 1778) also known as Carl von Linne, father of modern taxonomy and ecology. He was a Swedish naturalist and explorer who was the 1st to fame principles for defining natural genera
  • The portion of Earth called biosphere holds the numerous varieties of organisms that dwell in water, land, and air.
  • Organisms are ordered in six different kingdoms namely:
    1. Kingdom Archaea,
    2. Kingdom Eubacteria
    3. Kingdom Protista
    4. Kingdom Fungae
    5. Kingdom Plantae
    6. Kingdom Animalia
  • Bacteria are unicellular organisms, and they exist in a group called clusters
  • Bacteria that decompose dead organisms are called bacteria of decay or decomposers
  • Bacteria that causes diseases are known as pathogenic bacteria
  • Pathogenic microorganisms are the diseases that causes microorganisms
  • 3 major shapes of bacteria:
    1. Coccus (round or spherical)
    2. Bacillus (rod-shaped)
    3. Spirillum-shaped bacteria (spiral)
