    • What is meant by 'place'?
      The term place can have an objective meaning, such as map coordinates of a place. However, it can be viewed as being more than just a location. There is a social connection to people (locale). A place can also be viewed subjectively to individuals in ways that are personal. Places can be meaningful at a social or cultural level and these meanings may be shared by different groups of people.
    • What is meant by 'space'?
      Space is a location. It can have objective locational coordinates, but it has no subjective meaning. E.g. It may be somewhere which is not familiar to an individual because they have never been there, or heard of it. In addition, it feels like an empty, desolate location with no social connection to people.
    • What complexities exist when trying to classify a place and a space?
      • A space can become a place over time.
      • A place can become a space over time.
      • Different people have different perceptions - some thing space, others a place.
      • The meaning of a place can change over time.
    • What is meant by 'location'?
      A place on the map such as a grid reference or latitude longitude coordinate.
    • What is meant by 'locale'?
      A setting where everyday life activities take place such as an office, park, school. Attitudes & behaviours are forged by social interactions in such places. Within these locales, we tend to behave in a particular way driven by the social norms we understand.
    • What is meant by 'sense of place' ?
      The subjective attachment to a place (i.e. its emotional/personal meaning).
    • What are the factors that can influence a person's perception of a place?
      RAGERS - Role, age, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexuality.
