  • Why did people move away from the centre of Detroit?
    During the World War, bigger factories with better facilities were built in the suburbs of Detroit as there was little room in the centre near the existing factories. These factories were originally used for war efforts, but after the war, car manufacturers moved into them as they were bigger and had better facilities. People found it easier to move to the outside of town than to stay in the centre and commute in so people would start to leave the centre of town, leaving abandoned houses and factories. People moving into Detroit for work would move into the suburbs because that is where the jobs were in the factories, and this was the main reason as to why people went to Detroit.

    Race riots in the centre was also a driving factor for many white people to flee to the suburbs for safety.
