Statistical Infrequency

Cards (2)

  • Abnormality- statistical infrequency
    • Mathematical method to define abnormality as being based on infrequency- if it rarely happens it's abnormal
    • Idea that human attributes fall into a normal distribution within the population- there is an average and those who fall above and below the average
  • Strengths of the definition:
    • Objective definition- use of maths makes it clear what is and isn't defined as abnormal, low chance of bias
    • High population validity- takes into account the whole population which can give insight into characteristics
    Limitations of the definition:
    • Contradictory evidence- depression (seen as abnormal) occurs frequently in the population- 25% of the population will experience it at some point
    • Lacks cultural insight- objectivity of the definition doesn't consider cultural differences
