tranquilisation (calming) with sedation at high doses.
what is it used for?
Used as a pre-med with opioids, as it enhances each others effects.
Advantages- characteristics of the drug?
Smooth recovery, long duration (6hrs), safe as no coma if overdose, synergism as improves sedative effect of opioids.
Advantages- physiological affects of drug?
Anti-arrhythmic, anti-emetic as offsets emetic effects of some opioids like morphine. Spasmolytic as reduces discomfort when colic results from GI spasms. Anti-histamine and safe for respiratory at standard dose.
disadvantages- characteristics of the drug?
Unpredictable sedation, slow to peak effect 30-45 mins after I/M injection, no analgesia, long duration as is dose dependent but can be prolonged in liver dysfunction patients.
Disadvantages- physiological effects of the drug?
Can cause vasodilation which leads to hypotension and hypothermia. May cause syncope as excessive doses may reduce seizure threshold in epileptic patients. Poor muscle relaxation.
Drug differing sensitivities- Patients who are sensitive?
Boxers and giant dogs due to body size. Herding breeds require 25% reduced dose as it has prolonged affect on them.
Drug differing sensitivities- Patients who are resistant?
