  • what is it used for?
Used as a pre-med with opioids, as it enhances each others effects.
  • Advantages- characteristics of the drug?
Smooth recovery, long duration (6hrs), safe as no coma if overdose, synergism as improves sedative effect of opioids.
  • Advantages- physiological affects of drug?
Anti-arrhythmic, anti-emetic as offsets emetic effects of some opioids like morphine. Spasmolytic as reduces discomfort when colic results from GI spasms. Anti-histamine and safe for respiratory at standard dose.
  • disadvantages- characteristics of the drug?
Unpredictable sedation, slow to peak effect 30-45 mins after I/M injection, no analgesia, long duration as is dose dependent but can be prolonged in liver dysfunction patients.
  • Disadvantages- physiological effects of the drug?
Can cause vasodilation which leads to hypotension and hypothermia. May cause syncope as excessive doses may reduce seizure threshold in epileptic patients. Poor muscle relaxation.
  • Drug differing sensitivities- Patients who are sensitive?
Boxers and giant dogs due to body size. Herding breeds require 25% reduced dose as it has prolonged affect on them.
  • Drug differing sensitivities- Patients who are resistant?
