• Carry out flame test

  1. Clean nichrome wire loop

  2. Dip into conc hydrochloric acid

  3. Rinse in distilled water

  4. Dip into metal compound

  5. Put over clear blue part Bunsen flame

  6. Record color
• Contain ammonium ion (NH4+)


  1. Add sodium hydroxide

  2. Gently heat

  3. Positive: ammonia gas given off

  4. Ammonia: distinct strong smell, high conc - irritant, toxic
• Sulfur dioxide test

  1. Add dilute hydrochloric acid (sulfite ion - SO3 -2)

  2. SO2 bubbled thru potas manga(VII) solution

  3. Purple -> colorless
