• Money is provided to low income families to purchase food from stores by crediting an account which is accessed through a debit card.
• A household qualifies for the program if they have gross monthly income of or below 130% of the federal poverty level
• It is estimated that in 2018 SNAP has lifted 3.1 million people out of poverty
• Children in families using SNAP are less likely to be in poor health, underweight and are more likely to see a doctor as families have a little more to spend
• This scheme will help children keep healthier, more educated and they may be able to work their way out of poverty in the future
• Limited products that can be purchased such as alcohol and tobacco products, vitamins and medicines, and cleaning and hygiene products
• Can’t be used to buy hot food products
• SNAP benefits don’t increase when there is an increase of inflation
• evidence from feeding America shows that 41% of eligible households were enrolled in SNAP this means that families who are entitled to assistance are not claiming it
