  • Very ill with fever & increased neutrophils, malaise, weight loss, and clubbing
• Investigations for empyema

  Bacteriological investigation conducted on specimens obtained by transtracheal aspiration, bronchoscopy or percutaneous transthoracic aspiration
• Treatment for empyema

  1. Antibiotics (aerobic & anaerobic: cefuroxime and metronidazole)

  2. Tube drainage/ rib resection and drainage of the empyema cavity
