• WWI

  Also called the Great War (they didn't think there'd be a part 2)
• France & Russia made an alliance


  To keep Germany in check
• Germany allied with Austria-Hungary & Italy


  Forming the Triple Alliance
• Germany invaded France


  Sneaking through Belgium
• France & Russia allied with Britain


  Creating the Triple Entente/Allied Powers (later Japan too because they were allied with Britain)
• Germany also later allied with the Ottoman Empire


  Forming the Central Powers Alliance
• The Ottoman Empire was declining at the time because Greece (and others) were in their revolutionary eras
• When the Ottomans joined the Central Powers

  It sparked a Turkish nationalism movement, leading to the Armenian Genocide and the establishment of the country of Turkey (post WWI)
• Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary decided to visit Bosnia
• Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian guy: Gavrilo Princip
• Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia


  But Serbia was allied with Russia, and Russia was allied with France & Britain
• Italy switched sides after the Triple Entente offered them land once everything was over (but they never received it)
• Germany intercepted U.S. ships going to Britain

  One of which was the Lusitania with a bunch of civilians on board
• Germany sent the Zimmerman Telegram to Mexico, trying to include them in the war too
• Britain intercepted and stopped the Zimmerman Telegram, then told the U.S., and now the U.S. is also involved
• After the U.S. joined the Allied Powers

  Russia had to drop out of the war
• The Bolsheviks (socialist party) began to rise up in Russia, and their Tsar Nicholas II was forced to resign
• Alexander Kerensky tried to fix everything with a government, but failed
• The Bolsheviks' power grew under Vladimir Lenin, and he wrote the April Theses (1. War to end, 2. Land for peasants, 3. Power to soviets).. which led to the formation of the Soviet Union
• Russia created the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk and dropped out of WWI because they wanted civil war instead and wanted a self-healing era
• The war ended in 1918 because the Central Powers gave up
• Treaty of Versailles


  1. It's all Germany's fault (received blame, had to pay for everything, get rid of their territories, downsize military... sets stage for WWII). 2. Austria-Hungary gets divided (Czechoslovakia, Romania, Serbia)

  Tried to stop future conflict before it starts. Creation of the League of Nations (U.S. didn't even join and it later failed)
