  • coding- the format in which information is stored in the various memory stores (how)
  • capacity- the amount if information that can be held in a memory store (how much)

  • sensory register- the first immediate form of memory we have, and it takes in sensory information through our 5 senses
  • Short term memory (STM)- the limited time- capacity store. the coding that takes place here is usually acoustic ( in the form of sounds) and lasts for about 18 seconds, between 5-9 items on average
  • long term memory (LTM)- the permanent memory store. coding is usually semantic (word and meanings). it has an unlimited capacity and can store memories for a life time
