This video is going to review all main concepts you learned in grade 9 math in under 60 minutes
The video is divided into three parts based on the three main units in grade 9 math
Algebra
1. Learn about polynomials
2. Learn how to collect like terms
3. Learn distributive property
4. Learn exponent laws
Power
The base multiplied by itself a certain number of times, where the number of times is the exponent
Exponent laws
Product of powers rule
Quotient of powers rule
Power of a power rule
Power of a quotient rule
Power of a product rule
Anything to the power of 0 is 1
Negative exponent rule
Term
An expression in the form of a product of numbers and variables
Polynomial
An expression consisting of one or more terms connected by addition or subtraction
Monomial
A polynomial with one term
Binomial
A polynomial with two terms
Trinomial
A polynomial with three terms
Degree of a term
The sum of the exponents on the variables in the term
Degree of a polynomial
The highest degree of any term in the polynomial
Polynomial
A polynomial is an expression that consists of variables and coefficients, involving only the operations of addition, subtraction, and non-negative integer exponents
Polynomial
The degree of a polynomial is the highest exponent of any variable in the polynomial
The degree of a term is the sum of the exponents on the variables in that term
Determining the degree of a term
Add up the exponents on the variables in the term
Determining the degree of a polynomial
Find the degree of the highest degree term in the polynomial
Like terms
Terms with the same variables and exponents, differing only in their coefficients
Collecting like terms
Add or subtract the coefficients of like terms, keeping the variables and exponents the same
Distributing a monomial to a polynomial
Multiply the monomial by each term in the polynomial
Solving linear equations
Isolate the variable by performing the same operations to both sides of the equation
To isolate a variable, perform the opposite operation to both sides of the equation
Checking the solution by substituting the answer back into the original equation
Solving equations
1. Do it to both sides of the equation
2. Isolate the variable
3. Check the answer by plugging it back into the equation
Isolating the variable
Divide both sides by the coefficient of the variable
Solving two-step equations
1. Isolate the term with the variable
2. Divide both sides by the coefficient of the variable
Solving equations with multiple variable terms
1. Get all the variable terms on one side of the equation
2. Isolate the variable
Solving equations with brackets
1. Use the distributive property to get rid of the brackets
2. Isolate the variable
Solving equations with fractions
1. Multiply both sides by the common denominator to get rid of the fractions
2. Isolate the variable
Cross multiplication
Shortcut for solving fraction = fraction equations: multiply the denominator of one side by the numerator of the other side
Solving word problems
1. Represent each person's amount with a variable
2. Write an equation using the given information
3. Solve the equation to find the individual amounts
