    FREEDOM BASED - Deals with civil & political rights, includes social freedom and equality. Such as the right to equal education and opportunities regardless of personal background.

    NEEDS BASED - Deals with social and economic rights. Seeks to provide equal opportunity for material needs through resources such as healthcare.

    CIVIL AND POLITICAL RIGHTS - This is focused on ‘freedom from’ instead of ‘right to’, stemming from American and French revolutions. In this stage,  the state’s control is limited. 
    Examples:  freedom from arbitrary arrest, detention, torture etc.

    ECONOMIC SOCIAL AND CULTURAL RIGHTS - A needs based rights focused on ‘rights to’ instead of ‘freedom from’ stemming from Marxist & Socialist ideas. 
    Examples:  rights to security, work, rest & leisure, protection against unemployment.
  • DEVELOPMENT OF HUMAN RIGHTS
    SOLIDARITY RIGHTS - This is rooted in events and period of WW2. Presented as collective rights having individual dimension. 
    Example: the right to peace satisfies human needs and at the same time benefits the individual person. — These are found in Article 28 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
  • RIGHT TO HUMAN DIGNITY
    Human rights, which promote and protect human dignity is concerned not only with what is right based on the law, but also with what is moral, right, and just across human relationships.

    Human Rights have the following characteristics:
    • THEY ARE MORAL RIGHTS.
    • THEY ARE ENTITLED TO EVERYONE.
    • THEY ARE UNALTERABLE OR  CANNOT BE CHANGED.

    CIVIL & POLITICAL RIGHTS - Protects individual’s freedom as a citizen of the country.
    • Right to life, to vote, to freedom of expression, to equality under the law, to an identity, to freedom of movement etc.

    ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, & CULTURAL - Guarantees the person a decent life and dignity as a citizen.
    • Right to education, food, clean water, physical and mental health, housing, security of work  etc.

    EQUALITY - Guarantees the person equal treatment regardless of economic status, intellectual capacity, level of education, gender, religion, or beliefs.
