  this determines the penetrating power of the x-ray beam, the higher the kV the more electrons move around and the more energy is converted to photons
• Film Focal Distance (FFD)

  describes the distance between the target and the surface of the film, this affects the quantity of x-rays that reach the film
• Milliamperage (mA)

  the current that heats the filament in the cathode of the x-ray is measured in this, the higher the temperature the number of electrons increases
