Food Security and Farming

Cards (4)

  • Increasing birth-rate = increasing population so more mouths to feed
Changing diets in developed countries = scarce food resources transported around the world
New pests and pathogens that affect farming = destroy/damage crops/livestock
    Environmental changes = widespread famine
conflicts= affects availability of water of food
  • How do you Improve the Efficiency of Food Production from Animals?
restrict energy transfer from animals to environment so more energy available for growth. This is done by limiting movement (e.g. caging) or by controlling the surrounding temperature.
By feeding animals high protein foods, it increases growth
  • Why is it important to prevent fish stocks from continuing to decline?
Stocks may not be high enough for breeding to continue so certain species might disappear from some areas altogether
  • Explain/Describe how fish stocks can be conserved at a sustainable level
Control of net sizes, bigger mesh sizes- younger/smaller fish are not caught so they can live longer
Introduction of fishing quotas- fewer fish caught so remaining fish can reproduce
