  • to prepare for the Battle of Cambrai in 1917, Oswald Robertson stored 22 units of blood in glass bottles, calling it the first 'blood depot'.
  • 20 Canadians were treated and 11 survived, despite being so badly in shock 
  • This was the first time blood was used to treat soldiers in shock, and proved the potential.
  • However, blood banks at CCS's were not able to make a huge difference for those urgently needing blood on the front lines
