CPAP exam

• What about the practical exam - when to use CPAP:

  • A patient in type 1 respiratory failure on high FiO2 and still increased work of breath e.g. pneumonia
  • A patient with bibasal atelectasis post surgery and type 1 respiratory failure
• What about the practical exam:

  • You will need to be able to discuss the physiological effects of IPPB and CPAP if you bring them up in your clinical scenario
  • You will need to be able to discuss the settings of IPPB
  • You will need to justify their use with an understanding of the clinical indications for both techniques
  • Don’t forget to consider any possible precautions/contraindications e.g. haemoptysis or low BP
