What is the Earth's structure made of?
Made up of three layers - the crust, the mantle and the core
What is the Earths Crust?
Solid outer part of Earth
Describe the Earths Mantle.
Area of hot molten rock beneath Earth's crust
Describe the Earths Core?
At the centre of Earth, has two parts - the inner core and the outer core
How thick is the earths Crust?
10-70 km thick
Earth's crust can be divided into oceanic crust and continental crust
Describe the Oceanic crust
Ocean floors are mostly made up of, less than 10 km thick, made of heavier rocks rich in magnesium and iron, e.g. basalt
Describe the Continental crust
Usually about 30 km thick, made up of rocks rich in silica such as granite, about 40% of Earth's surface
Ocean crust is generally much younger than continental crust because it is continually being created by volcanoes that erupt on the ocean floor
Which fruit represents the Earths structure?
Peach Skin represents the crust, stone (pip) at the centre represents the solid inner core, flesh represents the mantle and the outer core
What is Structure?
The way in which different parts are put together to make something
What does Molten mean?
Heated to a very high temperature so that it becomes liquid
Name the three layers of the Earth's structure.
Core mantle and crust
What is the crust?
Solid outer part of earth
What is the
mantle
?
An area of hot
molten
rock beneath Earth's
crust
What two parts can the Earth's crust be divided into?
Oceanic
crust and
continental
crust.
What is oceanic crust made of?
Heavy rocks rich in magnesium and iron eg basalt
What are the two areas that the earths crust can be divided into?
Oceanic
crust and
continental
crust
Which is younger oceanic/continental? Why
Oceanic - constantly being created by volcanoes
