Stuck in the Middle

Cards (2)

  • How is Gerald "stuck in the middle"?
He is caught between the older and younger generation- liminality. He is less impressionable than perhaps Sheila and Eric in his convictions, but he does accept his own responsibility.
  • Priestley presents Gerald as deliberately ignoring his sense of morality and instead tries to forget his actions. He intentionally chooses to only react to the injustice that is obvious to him rather than the institutionalised prejudice that the class system causes. This is evident by the fact that he only helped Eva because the injustice was visible to him.
