What were the common causes of crime?

How did new roads cause crime? 
As people could easily steal from those travelling
How did poor banking cause highway robbery? 
People carried all of their wealth with them so it was very easy to steal
What type of crime did new roads and poor banking lead to?
Highway robbery - Opportunist
How did high import tax cause crime? 
People thought the tax was ridiculous and preferred to buy smuggled goods
Why was there an increase in smuggling? 
Import tax made goods more expensive than normal so people preferred to buy cheaper smuggled goods
How did poor policing cause crimes? 
As criminals could get away with crimes with little to no consequences
How did urban areas cause crime? 
They were overcrowded and many lived in poverty so resorted to crime
Why was drink-related crime common? 
As alcohol was cheap
Why was it easier to get away with crime in bigger towns?
People didn’t tend to know each other well
Why did rookeries breed crime? 
As policing was poor and narrow streets made crime easy

Protest and disorder

As they felt like they had no other choice due to a lack of rights

It took peoples jobs/ fewer people were needed
Why did riots begin due to the industrial revolution?
Poor working conditions, new machines and a lack of rights
How did the agrarian revolution cause protest?
Machines took jobs and caused unemployment, and the toll gates charged farmers unfairly to transport fertiliser into their farms

The houses were poor and working conditions were bad with low wages, the working class had no choice but to protest
