During the Tudor period, it is estimated that there were 300 Black people living in England.
These people had a wide range of jobs, including: musicians, servants, divers, explorers, and weavers.
Some of these people migrated to England straight from Africa, whereas others migrated from other countries like Spain or Portugal.
Black Tudors were well integrated into their communities as church records show full participation in church life.
In 2017, Miranda Kaufmann published her book researching the lives of the Black Tudors. She highlighted the existence and importance of Black people living in Tudor England, something that had been previously overlooked.
