• Shallow focus of only 15 km 
• Occurred on the north coast of the south island. 
• Complex sequence of ruptures leading to maximum ground shaking over a wider area. 
• 2 people died and 57 injured. 
• Landslides caused significant damage to infrastructure.

  100,000 landslides affected an areas of 100,000 km2 due to high levels of weak sedimentary rocks and great shaking.
• Could lead to further issues as high precipitation could trigger more slides due to the now unstable conditions.
• 20 aftershocks a day 
• Most of the shaking occurred in areas with sparse population density.

  Kaikoura the most affected town with 5000 residents.
• Expected $3.5 billion due to the economic damage to infrastructure and housing.

  Most significant issue was the destruction of transport which has had the largest long term impact.

  No access to Kaikoura which was a tourist town and highly reliant.
• Rare seals lost habitat (pool (inlet) and waterfall as a result of land slipping) seals killed plus population disturbed in the rebuild.
• Extremely effective response team.

  New harbour created due to the uplift which has destroyed and made access to the coast difficult.

  Had learned from Christchurch and meant response teams, insurance and rebuild occurred much more quickly.
