  • Provides 33% of India's entire tax revenue
  • Means 40% of international flights to India land there
  • Demand for property has driven rents in exclusive parts of the city higher than those in London or New York
  • Has headquarters of Indian TNCs like Tata Steel and Mukesh Ambani Oil
  • Cause India's middle class now numbers over 300 million people and their preferred lifestyles are often decided in Mumbai
  • Problems with health - pollution: water and air
  • Widespread poverty and unemployment in a large percentage of the population - high birth rate due to more people means theres not enough employment
  • Poor education - lack of skill - unemployment. Too many people mean that schools and public services cant handle it
  • There is little land so land value is expensive so people cannot afford homes so they live in illegal shantytowns and slums
  • Poor transport links - incredibly cramped due to so many people, 3500 people die in suburban railways each year
  • The influx of people from the surrounding countryside has caused the city to increase in size. It was originally developed on a peninsular surrounded by sea and this is now a restriction on further urban growth
  • The price of land in the CBD has sky rocketed, many people still move there in search of a better life. Many of these migrants are unskilled and unable to get work so many slums are set up to accommodate those
  • Even for skilled workers, finding housing is difficult as it is expensive and in short supply. The suburbs consist of poorly built, cheap housing which is a significant distance away from the CBD. Further accommodating this issue is the fact that the public transport is massively over crowded.
