Gibsons theory

Cards (3)

  • Gibson's direct theory says that perception happens directly. The visual environment gives us all the information our brain needs to perceive things accurately. We do not need to fill in gaps by using our expectations and past experience.
  • Gibson believes that there is no difference between sensation and perception. Gibson suggested that our eyes are highly sophisticated organs which have evolved to detect very fine changes in the environment.
  • Gibson said that everything in the optic array (what we can see at any 1 time) gives us all the information we need to be able to judge depth, distance and movement without the need to make inferences from past experience. An inference is a interpretation of what something actually represents or means.
