endocrine system

Cards (7)

  • endocrine system
instructs glands to release hormones directly into the bloodstream
the hormones are carried towards the target organs in the body
acts slower but more widespread than nervous system
  • example of hormone
thyroxine produced by the thyroid gland
    affects cells in the heart
    increases heart rate
also affects cells in the body increasing metabolic rates
    in turn affects growth rates
  • fight or flight response
when a stressor is perceived the hypothalamus activates the pituitary gland
triggers activity in the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system
ANS changes to the psychologically aroused sympathetic state
  • adrenaline
    released from adrenal medulla
triggers physiological changes in the body
    e.g increased heart rate
creates physiological arousal for flight or fight response
  • immediate and automatic
the flight or fight response happens as soon as the threat is detected
is an acute response and is automatic
the body moves to the sympathetic state (e.g. increased heart rate, breathing rate)
  • parasympathetic action
once the threat has passed the parasympathetic Ns returns the body to its resting state
works in opposition to sympathetic system
acts as a brake and reduces the activities of the body that were increased by the actions of the sympathetic branch
referred to the rest and digest response
  • hormone
biochemical substance that circulates in the blood
    only affects target organs
    produced in large quantities
    very powerful effects
