Thrombocytopenia

• Thrombocytopenia is when the platelet count is below 150 000.
• Causes

  • low production of platelet
  • increased breakdown of platelet (heparin)
• Symptoms

  • bruising
  • nosebleeds
  • petechiae (micro hemorrhages)
• Bleeding precautions:

  • electric razor
  • no aspirin (antiplatelet)
  • small gauge needles
  • decreased needle sticks
  • protect from injury
• Signs of bleeding

  • hematuria
  • nosebleeds
  • gingival bleeding
  • bruising
