Biological Bases

Cards (7)

  • Long term potentiation
Increased efficiency of a synapse when repeatedly stimulated leading to memories being easier to fire
  • Explicit memory

Memories for experiences or facts that are located in the hippocampus or the frontal lobe
  • Hippocampus
Hub through which complex neural memory networks are made so memories can be stored elsewhere
  • Implicit memory

Memories affected by cerebellum (classical conditioning) or the basal ganglia (procedural memory)
  • Emotional memory

Memories related to feelings, centered around the amygdala
  • Flashbulb memory

Usually a very personal memory with intense detail usually associated to emotional memory. Not immune to alteration, but super vivid because it's emotional. Can also be shared, like with people who remember where they were on 9/11
  • Basal ganglia
Deep brain midbrain structures that work with procedural memory
