  • News
    An oral or written report of an event that happened, is happening, will happen in the North, East, West or South that is of interest to the reader and which should be reported
  • What is interesting to one is not always interesting to another
  • What is hot news today may be irrelevant tomorrow
  • News story
    • Appealing to a particular reader for any or all of the following elements:
  • Conflict
    • Physical or mental conflict - man versus man, man versus animals, man versus nature, or man versus himself. Examples: stories of war, athletic meets and journalism contests
  • Immediacy or Timeliness
    • The more recent the event, the more interesting it is to the reader
  • Proximity or Nearness
    • Geographical nearness as well as nearness of kinship or of interest. Example: a Filipino reader is more concerned about a cholera epidemic in Asia than in Europe unless they have relatives in Europe
  • Prominence
    • Some people, places or things are more prominent than others by reasons of wealth, social position or achievements
  • Significance
    • Whatever is significant to the life of an individual is interesting to them. Example: news about increase in oil prices or imminence of war
  • Names
    • Important names make important news. The more names there are in the story, the better
  • Drama
    • Picturesque background and dramatic actions make a story more appealing. Anything that moves a reader to tears or laughter is good news
  • Oddity or Unusualness
    • Strange or unnatural events, objects, persons, and places. An odd story is interesting because of its human-interest side
  • Romance and Adventure
    • The romance of famous people or the romance of humans with nature
  • Sex
    • Stories of sex are usually related with stories of romance, marriage, divorce and the varied activities of men with women. But sex is also involved when a woman is elected President or a bandit queen robs a bank
  • Progress
    • The onward and forward march of civilisation, the progress of a country chronicled step by step in the newspaper. Trend towards development communication, reports on significant changes in the established order and scientific achievements
  • Animals
    • Stories of animals, especially those with talents, are good reading matter because of their human interest value
  • Number
    • Sweepstakes numbers, vital statistics, results, scores in games, casualties, fatalities, prices of goods make good news
  • Emotion
    • All the other elements of news appeal to the emotion. Includes the innate desire for food, clothing, shelter; the universal interest in children, animals and nature; and the natural feeling of love, sympathy and generosity, of fear, hatred and jealousy
