• crust - 1st layer of the earth
• mantle - layer of the earth that is made up of the solid rock
• core - center layer of the earth , where the mantle and crust meet
• core is divided into 2 parts:

  • inner core
  • outer core
• outer core - liquid layer
• inner core - solid layer
• earthquake - shaking of the ground
• seismograph - a instrument that measures the motion of the ground during an earthquake
• 2 types of earthquake:

  • volconic
  • tectonic
• volcanic earthquake - strong volcanic eruption
• tectonic earthquake - movement of Earth's crust
• magnitude - amount of energy released by an earth from it's focus
• epicenter - ground above the focus
• richter scale - a scale that measures the magnitude of the earthquake

• circumpacific belt or pacific ring of fire - area where crustal plates are weak
