learning theories key question

Cards (9)

  • The three learning theories that can be applied to the key question is classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and social learning theory
  • The key question is “should airline companies offer for treatment programs to passengers with a fear of flying?”
  • classical conditioning looks at unconditioned stimulus with a unconditioned response is paired with a neutral stimulus therefore creating a conditioned stimulus for a conditioned response.
  • operant conditioning looks at reward and punishments which can influence a persons behaviour. For example if something bad happens while flying this can create the same effect as a punishment.
  • social learning theory looks at observation of behaviour. for example someone may see or hear someone with a fear flying so they may imitate the behaviour and also be scared.
  • A treatment that can be used to treat fear of flying is flooding therapy. this forces a person to come into contact with their fear without any means of escape. For example, forcing a person onto a plane and not allowing them to leave should help a person slowly calm down and realise they have nothing to be scared about.
  • A treatment for flying is systematic desensitisation. this slowly introduces someone to their fear and allows a less stressful environment than flooding. for example, a treatment plan would be too put someone next to a plane and then put someone into a plane and then put someone into a plane while flying.
  • Capafons study looked at investigating effects of systematic desensitisation as a treatment for fear of flying.
  • capafons used a video of a plane trip and used different diagnostic information and recording scales to identify anxiety caused by the video on a plane.
