  • 'My naked weapon is out. Quarrel and I will back thee' - Samson

The play opens with Samson boasting he is a violent man and trying to start a fight. The opening establishes Verona as a place where violence can break out over nothing. They are afraid of the punishment which is just as violent as the fighting itself. The young men of Verona are trapped between two threats of violence; their enemies, and of the prince who threatens to execute anyone involved in fighting. This helps to create the sense that the families are trapped within this feud
  • 'From forth the fatal loins of these two foes, A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life.' - Prologue

Their births and deaths are described in the same short phrase, suggesting their deaths were fated from birth. Could also represent the shortness of their lives. 'Take their life' They share a life and experience it as one.
