  • Magistrates court.
    Deals with 95% of cases, deals with mainly summary offences and some tribal either way or family proceedings. All criminal proceedings start here. Heard by a district judge and the maximum punishment was 12 months imprisonment and a unlimited fine
  • Supreme court

    Reviews and listens to appeals from high court and the court of appeal. They can debate government legislation and the president, deputy president and 1p justices of the supreme court sits in the court.
  • Court of appeal
    Involves the criminal division and civil division. Appeals to supreme court. The civil division hears from county court and high court, criminal division hears appeals from the crown court. The main judges are the Lord Justice of appeal and Lady justice of appeal.
  • High court
    Deals with civil law (non criminal) cases. Appeals to the court of appeal and the supreme court. Has 3 divisions; the kings bench, chancery division and family division. Heard by a single judge.
  • Crown court

    Deals with criminal cases which heards all indictable offences. Appeals to the court of appeal and high court. Has around 92 locations across England and Wales.
