  • What are the requirements for the National Senior Certificate (NSC)?
    • Two official languages: one at the Home Language level and Additional Language level. Minimum: 40% pass rate.
    • Mathematical Literacy or Mathematics. Minimum: 40% pass rate.
    • Life Orientation. Minimum: 40% pass rate.
    • Plus 3 other subjects from the NCS-approved subjects. Minimum: 30% pass rate.

  • Being
    Being means who you are. Three being domain main aspects:
    • Physical being: Physical appearance, exercise, hygiene.
    • Psychological being: Mental health, self-awareness, self-control.
    • Spiritual being: Values, morals, religious beliefs.
  • Becoming
    Becoming means who you want to be. Three becoming domain main aspects:
    • Practical becoming
    Everyday actions you take to live: Going to school, paid work, volunteer work.
    • Leisure becoming
    Activities that lessen stress: Spending time on hobbies, watching TV, visiting family.
    • Growth becoming
    Activities to promote keeping up your knowledge and skills: Studying, reading, learning.
  • Community belonging
    Community belonging means fitting in with your physical environment. Three community belonging domain main aspects:
    • Physical belonging
    Your link with your physical environment: Home, school, workplace.
    • Social belonging
    Your link with your social environment: Family, friends, co-workers.
    • Community belonging
    Your access to resources and services to community members: Health services, social services, education.
  • What roles do community needs play in your choice of career?

    Working in a field that a person enjoys and with an organization that matches their skills and values helps to better ensure success in the career. To find jobs that can also be beneficial to a community, a person can assess what needs should be met to strengthen or sustain a community.
  • What can you do to help you afford to study for this career?
    • Bursary: An amount of money given to a needy student to help pay for their studies. Doesn't need to be paid back.
    • Student loan: Money is borrowed from a financial institution. Does need to be paid back.
    • Scholarship: Some companies, businesses and organisations award a scholarship to a student who performs well in sports/studies.
    • Learnership: Allows you to earn while you learn. You study the theory at college and practise what you have learnt in a real job.
  • Stereotyping
    Stereotyping is having a fixed idea that all people or things with a particular characteristic are the same.
  • Accessibility
    You need to ask yourself:

    • How close are you to the institution?
    • If you have to travel, could you afford the transport cost?
    • Could you perhaps study this course through distance education?
  • Impact of income tax

    Income tax is a tax that all individuals and companies must pay for what they have earned or for their profits. Three ways to pay tax:
    • SITE: Standard income tax on employees (SITE). Is paid by employees who earn less than R120 000 a year.
    • PAYE: Pay as you earn (PAYE). This tax gets deducted from your salary of more than R10 000 every month.
    • Provisional tax: It is paid 2 times a year. Tax is paid by people who do not have the same income every month and year.
