Delphy and Leonard

Cards (9)

  • Writes from a feminist perspective
  • Focuses on the importance of work. In their view it is men, rather than capitalists as such, who are the main beneficiaries of the exploitation of women's labour.
  • They believe that the family has a central role in maintaining patriarchy; the family is an economic system involving a particular set of labour relations in which men benefit from and exploit the work of women. Women are oppressed because their work is appropriated within the family (eg when wives have paid employment outside the home they still have to carry out household tasks which are not equally shared with their male partners).
  • Strengths:
It acknowledges the roles of women. It is recent so it is more relevant in society. Women still do the most of the household work and it acknowledges dual burden.
  • Weaknesses:
Don't take into account other aspects of family life such as class and ethnicity. Only looks at the nuclear family and ignores the other types of family. Ignores the rise of lone parents.
