One-Nation conservatism

Cards (4)

  • Human Nature
    • Selfishness in the free market - human nature means a free-market might not always work in the national interest for stability
    • Paternalism is key and paternalistic intervention helps with humans being naturally unequal and flawed
    • Rationalism is another key part of human nature as humans are capable of a degree of central planning
    • Taking pragmatic steps to reform and rebuild the past is very useful for the progression of human nature
  • Society
    • Business owners and landlords are not fufilling their obligations as feudal landowners used to do
    • Noblesse oblige - those that come from privilege do have a duty of care over those who may need it
    • Organic society that allows society to naturally grow and develop over time
    • Society should work together with cohesion and social unity
    • Welfare state that cares for the people within a society
    • Extreme individualism is negative for society
  • The state
    • National unity and social cohesion - must act in the national interest, not for a particular class, the state must promote one stable nation
    • Promote economic growth, reduce unemployment and lift people out of poverty while respecting property rights
    • The state should paternalistically regulate industry and offer basic support - eg welfare state prevents the emergence of revolutionary conciousness
    • Neutral arbitrator to prevent chaos and anarchy
    • Some redistribution of wealth/income because the rich have some moral duty to the poor but should not be 'too interfering'
  • The economy
    • Limited regulations - (reduced hours, improved working/living conditions) can help the poor without harming the economy
    • Planned capitalism - use loans and tax reforms to help businesses become more competitive - help industries to coordinate and plan
    • Often seen as reluctant supporters of capitalism and see some intervention as necessary - protectionist tarrifs
    • Keynesian economics - paternalistic and support full employment
