What is the method of making a salt?
• Measure 40 cm3 of sulphuric acid into a beaker
• Heat the acid gently using a Bunsen burner until it is almost boiling
• Add small amounts of the copper oxide powder and stir with a glass rod, add
until some of the copper oxide remains (you will see black powder)
• Filter the mixture into a conical flask using filter paper and a funnel
• Pour the contents into an evaporating basin
• Evaporate the water gently over a water bath until the volume goes to about a
third of the original and crystals begin to form
• Transfer into a crystallising dish and leave for at least 24 hours
• Pat the crystals dry between two pieces of filter paper
