Trenches

• No mans land was the area between the opposing trenches
• barbed wire was used at the front of trenches as an obstacle to enemy troops
• frontline trench

• reserve trench
• communication trench
• long-range artillery fire was behind the trenches to fire at enemy troops
• trenches followed a dog tooth or zig-zag pattern to stop an easy attack if the enemy got into the trench
• dugouts were holes in the side of the trenches wherethe men could take cover
• trench warfare was used during a stalemate
• British Trenches were made quickly so they had bad conditions leading to trench foot and disease to pass through the trenches quickly
