  • The role of women in Britain before the suffrage moment was that they had to do the chores and house work as they were “very fragile”. They also had to look pretty. A normal day for them would be to look after their children and do the cooking, cleaning and laundry.
  • Queen Victoria was in the upper class. she had private tutors to teach her all kind of subjects like Latin, German, french and history
  • Princess Sophia du leap singh was born on the 8th of august 1876. she lived in Suffolk and was the third daughter of maharaja Dulles singh. She sadly developed typhoid at the age of ten but was cured. A few years later her mother contracted a disease and fell into a coma. Her mother died on the 17th of September 1887.
  • on the 31st of may 1889 her father married Ada wetherill. in 1886 maharaja Dulles singh attempted to go back to india but was denied permission. queen Victoria was fond of Dulles Singh and his family. Sophia was the goddaughter of queen Victoria. at the age of 55 maharaja duleep Singh died on the 22nd of October 1893 in a rundown hotel in Paris.
  • when her father died she inherited a substantial wealth. she lived in Hampton court and sold the suffragette newspapers outside Hampton court. she joined the WSPU IN 1909. The government did not want to arrest her because of her connections to queen Victoria. Sophia also studied chemistry in university. in 1910 Sophia joined the Black Friday parade.
  • Sophia was arrested often for taking part in physical and violent protests but never went to jail because of her name and status. she because a Red Cross nurse during the First World War and tended to British Indian troops in Brighton. after the first worl war she continued to work for human rights. She also raised money for Indian soldiers.
  • in 1907 Sophia spent 6 months in india.
  • she was in an activist group led my meme line Pankhurst. she was summoned to court a couple fo times becuse of her activism and protests. she took part in the women’s war work and housed evacuees in the Second World War. she supported the indian women’s education association and walked with other suffragettes to the prime ministers office.
