  • Volleyball is played with 6 players per team on the court at one time.
  • Volleyball is played on a rectangular court that is 18m long and 9m wide.
  • The net is 2.24 m high for women and 2.43m high for men.
  • Volleyball is commonly played in the gym and on the sand. When played on sand it is called beach volleyball, played with 2 players per team.
  • A volleyball game generally begins with a coin toss. The referee calls the two captians to their stnad and does the toss.
  • The winner of the coin toss can decide to serve first, recieve first or they could choose which side of the net.
  • The loser of the coin toss can choose the choice that remains.
  • Players rotate in a clockwise motion throughout the court.
  • When you rotate into postion number 1 (back right position) you become the server.
  • The Libero is a defensive specialist and can only play in the back row. When that player rotates to the front row, The player taken out must come in to play for them.
  • Back row players cannot block at the net or play hit the ball in front of the attack line (3m line).
  • Serving: When serving, the player must stand anywhere behind the end line. They can stand anywhere along the line. The server's foot must not touch or go over the line. If it does, it is a violation which results in a loss of serve and a point for the other team.
  • Serves can be made underhand or overhand.
  • You get one attempt to serve the ball. If you miss, it is a violation: a loss of serve and a point for the other team.
  • The ball may touch the net on the serve as long as it continues over to the other side. It is still a good serve if it touches the net and goes over.
  • One player serves until either their team makes a violation or they make a violation.
  • The serve must go over the net with any assistance from another player.
  • Rally: When the ball is going bakc and forth between the teams after a serve, it is called a rally.\
  • During a rally, a team may contact the balll 3 times before the ball must be sent over to the other side.
  • A player may only contact the ball once. Someone else must contact the ball before a player contacts it again.
  • Contact with the ball must be brief. You cannot hold, skip or throw the ball.
  • A block at the net deos not count as one of the teams three contacts. You cna do a block plus three more contacts.
  • One player could block the ball and then proceed to play the ball again. This is the only acceptation to the rule about contacting the ball twice.
  • The ball can be played with any part of the body. It is usually played with the hands and arms, but if it was played with the foot or the head it would be a legal play.
  • If two players play the ball at the same time, it is considered one contact and either player could player the ball immediately after.
  • A volley ball game goes up to 25 points. You must win by 2 points. The game continues until one team has at least 25 points and is 2 points ahead of the other team.
  • One team scores on every play. The team that did not make the violation is the one that scores.
  • It is a violation if the ball lands outside of the boundary lines.
  • If a ball lands ON the boundary line it is considered to be in.
  • If the ball hits the ceiling, it is considered to be a Violation.
  • If the ball passes outside of the antennae on the net, it is considered to be out.
  • If a player hits the net at any time during play, it is a violation.
