  • The epidermis is the outermost layer of skin, consisting of stratified squamous epithelium.
  • The dermis is the middle layer of skin, composed of connective tissue.
  • The hypodermis (subcutaneous tissue) lies beneath the dermis and contains fat cells that serve as an energy reserve.
  • The integumentary system consists of skin, mucous membranes, hair & nails. This system also serves as a barrier to pathogens & helps regulate body temperature.
