Specialized cells

Cards (6)

  • Unicellular Organisms
Made up of 1 cell throughout their whole life
Able to make substances to carry out the functions of life
    Can divide + multiply quickly
    Examples, Bacteria + Amoeba
  • Multicellular Organisms
Organisms made up of multiple cells throughout their whole life
    Example, a human
  • Cell specialization
The process where general cells evolve to form specific cells with specific functions
    Examples, Red blood cells
  • Red Blood Cells
    Adapted to transport oxygen
No nucleus, leaves more space to carry oxygen
Disc shape, gives a larger surface area over which oxygen can be absorbed
  • Neurons
Adapted to send messages all over the body through nerves
Long axon, moves impulses from one part of the body to another
    Dendrites, contact other nerves
    Myelin coat, provides insulation
  • Sperm cells
Adapted to carry out sexual reproduction
Have many mitochondria, to provide energy whilst it swims
Have a flagellum tail, helps to swim to the uterus
