• Made of dead cells with no end walls
• Its hollow
• Made of lignin
• Has pits, from lack of lignin

  Allows water + mineral ions to diffuse between parallel xylem vessels
• Always in bundles
• Provides plants with strength and support (cause of lignin)
• Provides secondary cell wall thickness
