  • Scorched earth policy destroyed Boer farms and livestock.
  • Boer families and black Africans were interned in concentration camps.
  • The war included 400,000 British troops and cost £ 230 million.
  • 22,000 British troops were killed compared to just 6000 Boers.
  • The war came at incredible cost of money and men which showed the vulnerability of Britain's imperial control. The wars shortcomings was a main drive for national efficacy in Britain.
  • Black concentrations camps: In 1900, Kitchener (commander in chief) ordered the separation of black and white Boers into different concentration camps.
  • White concentration camps were provided with tents, water and rations whereas black camps were expected to build their own shelters and work for food.
  • Out of 130,000 black civilians in these camps, 20,000 died.
