Q1 - Sets

Cards (31)

  • Well-defined - is possible to determine whether an object belongs to a given set
  • Elements - also called as members, or objects of a set can be anything: numbers, people, letters of the alphabet, other sets, and so on
  • Universal Set - largest set
  • Finite Set - contains exact or countable numbers of set
  • Finite - J = { planets of the solar system}
  • Subset - a set of elements that are also in another set
  • Intersection of Sets - a set that has common element
  • Infinite - positive integers greater than 4
  • Three ways in which you can describe a set:
    • verbal description
    • roster form
    • set-builder notation
  • Equal Sets – it contains two or more sets that has exactly the same elements.
  • Disjoint Sets - two sets do not have a common element
  • Union of Sets - is the set containing the combined elements of two or more sets
  • Proper Subset
  • Equal Set - {1, 2, 3, 4} , {4, 3, 2, 1}
  • Equivalent Sets – is two sets that has the same number of elements
  • Set Notation
    A) Union
    B) Intersection
    C) Emty Set
    D) Not an Element
    E) Element
    F) Not a Subset
  • Joint Sets - if two sets had at least one common element
  • Cardinality - number of elements
  • Verbal Discriptive Method - is a method of describing sets in words
  • Curly Brackets - used to denote a list of elements
  • Set Builder Notation - describes the properties of the elements of the set
  • Roster or Listing Method - are conventionally denoted with capital letters and using curly brackets
  • Infinite Set – it contains elements that has no end. The ellipsis or the 3 dots means infinite or it goes on forever.
  • Consider P ={letters in the word “LEARN”}. What is n(P)?
    5
  • Empty - sides of a circle
  • Empty - whole numbers between 0 and 1
  • Infinite - set of counting numbers
  • Equivalent Set - {4, 5, 6} , {1, 2, 3}
  • In the given universal set of U = {1,2,3,4,5}, and A = {1,2}, what is the term
    applicable to set A?
    Subset
  • What is the roster form of the set K = {x | x are odd numbers from 2 and 8}?
    H = {3,5,7}
  • What is the rule method for the given set J = {1,2,3,4}?
    A = {x | x is a whole number less than 5}
