    • part of a Riverside Ward = one of 30 making up Liverpool city council
    • the city council has powers and duties such as education, services, regeneration, housing , etc.
    • also have local groups
  • cultural face
    • culture goes back to 19th century = greek orthodox church and synagogue
    • changed over time = now, major muslim festivals such as Eid and also Indika (an Indian art and music festival)
    • lots of different cultures and religions
    • has a mosque with up to 5000 praying during Eid
  • containerisation in toxteth
    • people used to unload goods by hand but now use machines = mass unemployment that affected the whole of Merseyside because most of toxteth worked either at the docks or in an industry linked with imports
    • docks also migrated further south to expand trade with Europe = lots of poverty and unemployment = a factor leading to the riots of 1981 (lowest point in toxteth history) = shows history as a changing place
