Stomach

• Functions:

  -Temporary storage tank for food, site of food breakdown, chemical breakdown of protein begins, deliver chyme (processed food) to the small intestine
• C-shaped organ located on the left side of the abdominal cavity
• Food enters at the cardioesophagel sphincter from the esophagus
• Food empties into the small intestine at the pyloric sphincter (valve)
• Sphincter: Ring of muscle surrounding and serving to guard or close an opening or tube
• Can stretch and hold 4 liters (1 gallon) of food when full
• Rugae: Internal folds of the mucosa present when the stomach is empty
