Biology - Cells and Microscopy

Cards (14)

  • Name the parts of an animal cell:
    Mitochondria, cytoplasm, nucleus, cell membrane.
  • Name the parts of a plant cell:
Mitochondria, cell wall, cytoplasm, vacuole, nucleus, cell membrane, chloroplasts.
  • What does the nucleus do?
Controls the functions and activities of a cell. Contains the instructions of making new cells or organisms.
  • What is the function of a cytoplasm?
Where most of the cell's reactions take place.
  • Mitochondria
Respiration occurs here - oxygen + sugar reacts to release energy the cells need.
  • What is the function of ribosomes?

The area where protein synthesis takes place. All proteins needed in cells are made here.
  • What is the function of a chloroplast?

Found in the green area of plants and help plants to undergo photosynthesis.
  • What is the function of a vacuole?

A space in the cytoplasm filled with sap which is important for keeping cells rigid to support the plant.
  • What is the function of the cell membrane?
Controls passage of substances in and out of the cell.
  • What is the function of the cell wall?
Protects the cell. Strengthens the cell wall and the structure of the cell.
  • What is microscopy?
Microscopy is the use of microscopes to visualize cells and their structures. There are 2 main microscopes, a light microscope and an electron microscope.
  • A light microscope involves using rays of light to zoom in on the view of an image. A microscope uses lenses to focus on image. The disadvantages of light microscopes are low magnification and resolution, in comparison to an electron microscope.
  • What is resolution?
The ability to tell 2 or more objects apart.
  • What is magnification?
Magnification is how much the lenses can zoom into an image.
