excretion

    Cards (23)

    • Excretion
The removal of metabolic waste from the body
    • Egestion
To remove the undigested food from the body
    • Excretory system
This system consists of the lungs skin and kidneys which filter waster from the body
    • Renal
The artery and vein that transport blood to and from the kidney
    • Kidney
The organ responsible for removing urea, water and some salts from the bloodstream
    • Bladder
      Stores urine
    • Ureter
The tubule that links the kidney and bladder
    • Urethra
Runs from the bladder to the outside world
    • Cortex
The darker, outer region of the kidney where the glomerulus, bowman's capsules and proximal and distal convolutes tubules are located
    • Medulla
Lighter, inner region of the kidney that is hypertonic due to the active transport of salts out of the loop of Henle
    • Nephron
The microscopic filtered g units that make up the kindeys
    • Glomerulus
A bundle of capillaries from the renal artery that generates high blood pressure by having a larger entry article than leaving arteriole
    • Bowman's capsule
A hollow cup of cells that contains the glomerulus
    • proximal convoluted tubule
The site of selective re absorption
    • Loop of henle
A nephron structure that is involved in osmoregulation but without the use of ADH
    • distal convoluted tubule
Between the loop of Henle and the collecting duct; Selective reabsorption and secretion occur here, most notably to regulate reabsorption of water and sodium
    • Collecting duct
A segment of the nephron that returns water form the filtrate to the bloodstream.
    • Ultrafiltration
The process where small molecules are forced from the blood out of the capillaries of the glomerulus, under high pressure, into the Bowman's capsule.
    • Glomerular filtrate
Substances that filter out of the blood through the thin walls of the glomeruli
    • Selective reabsorbtion
the process in the kidney where the materials needed in the body such as glucose, some mineral ions, and water are reabsorbed back into the blood from the filtrate
    • Osmoregualtion
      The control of water balance.
    • Antidiuretic hormone

hormone secreted by the posterior pituitary gland which aids in water reabsorption by the kidney
    • Aquaporins
channel proteins that facilitate the passage of water
