  • Why are the six beliefs important for Muslims?
    1. Muslims believe the Six Beliefs should always be reflected in their actions

    2. It unites Sunni Muslims and makes them feel part of the Ummah.

    3. It helps Muslims understand their faith better - they follow the rules to be judged and awarded with paradise

    4. Salvation in Islam comes from believing the six beliefs and living in the way set out by Islam

    1. Belief in Oneness and Unity of Allah (Al - Tawhid)

    2. Belief in Divine Justice (Al-Adl)

    4. Belief in Imams (Al - Imamah)
    [Imamah = leadership]


    5. Belief in Day of Resurrection and Judgement (Mi'ad)
    [After death humans will be resurrected to be judged]
  • What do Shia Muslims believe about Imams?
    1. There are 12 infallible Imams

    2. God wanted to preserve Islam after Muhammad died over log long period of time to guide people

    3. There is only one single imam at a time

    4. The 12th imam is hidden and one day will appear to end tyranny and opression
  • What are the 5 roots of 'Usul ad-Din important?
    1. They are the basis of Shi'a Islam

    2. They unite the Shi'a Ummah

    3. They help Shi'ites understand their faith e.g resurrection/judgement

    4. They show what a Shi'a Muslim must believe and guide them on how to act to get to Jannah (heaven)

    Tawhid (Oneness)

    Al - Alim (Omniscient - all knowing)

    Al - Wadud (Omnibenevolent - the loving one)
    "Your Lord's bounty is not restricted"

    Al - Qadir (Omnipotent - All powerful)
    "He has power over all things"
  • Why are the characteristics of Allah important for Muslims?
    - While Muslims believe it is impossible to fully comprehend Allah, knowing some of his attributes helps them to understand some of his nature

    - Muslims can have a close relationship with Allah through worship (according to Surah 51:56, this is why humans were created)
  • Who were the prophets?
    They were morally good men who faithfully pass on Allah's message without altering it

    They were chosen by Allah and received revelations from him.

    Muhammad was the final prophet because his messages couldn't be altered like the others.
  • Why are the prophets important?
    - They set an example to Muslims on how to live.

    - It is part of the Six Beliefs and the 5 roots of 'Usal ad-din

    - They were ordinary people. This teaches Muslims that they should have nothing to do with religions that claim divine status for their leaders.
  • Why is Adam important for Muslims?
    He shows that Allah is forgiving if we ask with a true heart for forgiveness. He teach Muslims how to repent and ask for forgiveness.
  • Why is Ibrahim important for Muslims?
    He teaches Muslims obedience and trusting Allah, and demonstrates
    Allahs plans will overcome everything.
  • Why is Ismail important for Muslims?
    He was willing to be sacrificed by God and rebuilt the Kaaba with Ibrahim.

    He shows obedience and teaches Muslims to trust in Allah's plans.

    Helped free the Israelites from Egypt

    He teaches Muslims to be obedient, to do what God commands and show submission
  • Why is Dawud important for Muslims?
    He defeated Jalut (Goliath) against all the odds, and was a great king.

    He teaches the importance of fasting and prayer, and the importance of caring for the earth.
  • Why is Isa important for Muslims?
    He performed miracles, but he was not the Sun of God neither did he die on the cross.

    He demonstrates Allah's power as Allah performed miracles through him.
  • Who were the Sahifa (Scrolls) given to? What does it say?
    It was given to Ibrahim/Abraham (Surah 53: 36-44) But it became so distorted, all copies were lost.
  • Who was the Tawrat (Torah) given to? What does it say?
    It was given to Musa/Moses (Surah 5:44).

    Although his message became distorted, some parts remained in the Torah of the Old Testament, which is why many traditions of Judaism (food laws etc) are similar to Islam
  • Who was the Zabur (Psalms) given to? What did it say?
    It was given to Dawud (David).

    There are 150 Psalms, made up of song, prayers and poems, which Muslims believe were inspired by Allah.

    Some have survived undistorted in the Psalms of the Old Testament
  • Who was the Injil (Gospel) given to? What did it say
    It was given to Isa/ Jesus (Surah 5:26).

    However, this is not the same as the four Gospels of the New Testament.

    Jesus preached the Injil to the Jews while the gospels are human records of what people remember Jesus preaching.
  • What are the main distortions of Injil in the New Testament?
    - Jesus was the Son if God when really he was a prophet (Surah 4:117)
    - Jesus died on the cross when really he was taken to heaven
    - Christians removed parts that foretold the coming of Mohammed
  • What is the Sunnah?
    It contains the practice and examples of Prophet Muhammad's life
  • What is the Hadith?

    The words and sayings of the prophet Muhammad.
  • Why is the Quran important?

    - Everything in it is true because it is the word of Allah, so Muslims must follow it
    - Nothing in it can be altered so it is eternal
    - It teaches Muslims key beliefs like Unity of Allah and his characteristics.
    - It also sets out how Muslims should love through Salat, Sawm, Zakah, Hajj, not eating pork and not drinking etc.
  • What is Malaikah?

    Belief in Angles
  • What are angels?
    They are real created beings who will eventually die. They are supernatural and beyond the human world. They are made from light and are servants of Allah. They have no free will and must obey Allah, and they have been given great powers by him.
  • Who is Jibril?

    His is the chief of the angels. He revealed messages from Allah to the prophets (2:97)
    He told Ibrahim about the birth of Ishaq and Maryam about the birth of Isa. He also revealed the Quran to Muhammed on Mount Hira.
  • Who is Mika'il?
    He is the arch angel of mercy. He is the guardian of heaven, protecting it from evil. He gives rewards to people on earth who are good, and he brings rain and thunder.
  • Who is Izra'il?
    He is the angel of death, and will blow the trumpet twice to start the day of Judgement. He takes the soul of people at death and returns them to Allah (32:11). He can only act in Allah's command as Allah decides when a person dies.
  • Why are angels important?
    - Allah is transcendent but is able to communicate with humans through them.
    - They help Muslims understand Allah better as they revealed truths about Allah.
    - They ensure that on the Day of Judgement Allah will have all the facts when judging people on their lives.
    - Muhammed told his followers that angels surround humans at all times.
  • What is Al-Qadr?

    Predestination; The belief that Allah has the knowledge in advance of all that will happen.
  • What do Muslims believe about predestination and free will?
    They believe that predestination dosent stop humans from making free choices. Their choices contribute to the realisation of God's plan.
  • What benefits does predestination bring?
    It makes the believer courageous and never afraid to say the truth. It urges them to preform Jihad because they know the span of their lifetime is predetermined.

    It makes people responsible for their actions as they want to please Allah and be rewarded.
  • What do Sunni Muslims believe about predestination?
    - Allah gave humans free will, but he still knows what will happen because he is Al - Alim.

    - Nothing happens except the will of Allah

    - Free will is important to help people learn and to freely submit to Allah.

    - Giving free will means bad things can happen and that humans are responsible for their sin.
  • What do Shi'a Muslims believe about predestination?
    They reject predestination, as they believe it contradicts Mi'ad (Day of Judgement). It is not fair for Allah to punish or reward someone for something that he predestined them to do.
  • What is Akhirah?

    Life after death; Humans will be resurrected either physically or spiritually, and taken to barzakh, the stage between Seth and the time of judgement.
  • What is Jannah?
    Heaven; A place of paradise prepared by Allah for the righteous. Those who have died in battle pass directly into paradise.
  • Who are kiraman katibin?
    Angels who record peoples actions for the Day of Judgement.
  • What do Muslims believe about justice?
    Allah is known as Al'Adl (The Just). Muslims strive to be fair in their own daily lives. Islam commands people to be completely impartial (4:135). Muslims believe there should be consequences for your actions.
  • What is Hudud?
    Crimes against God, which have a fixed punishment.
  • What is Ta'zir?
    Crimes for which punishment is not stated in the Quran or Hadith, and is left to the decision of a qadi (Islamic judge)
