Science - Eclipses (4th Quarter) Lesson 1

Cards (22)

  • Eclipse - it occurs when the sun, earth and moon are positioned along a straight path or aligned
  • Shadow- it is a dark figure or image that is formed when an object blocks a source of light
  • 2 Parts of a Shadow:
    • Umbra
    • Penumbra
  • 2 Types of Eclipses:
    • Solar Eclipse
    • Lunar Eclipse
  • Solar Eclipse happens at New moon
  • Lunar eclipse happens at Full moon
  • What is in the center when it is at Solar Eclipse? Moon
  • What is in the center when it is at Lunar Eclipse? Earth
  • a total solar eclipse happens when the moon passes betweeen the sun and earth, completely blocking the face of the sun.
  • a partial solar eclipse happens when the moon blocks the sun but only partially. as a result, some part of the sun is visible, whereas the blocked part appears dark
  • 3 types of Solar Eclipse:
    • Total
    • Annular
    • Partial
  • An annular solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly between the earth and sun, but does not completely cover the sun's disk. instead, it covers most of the sun, leaving its OUTER EDGE visible as a bright ring or "ANNULUS" around the darkened moon.
  • The moon becomes red for a few hours during lunar eclipse
  • Is lunar eclipse visible to the whole earth? No
  • Lunar eclipse is only visible from half of the earth
  • 2 types of Lunar Eclipse:
    • Total
    • Penumbral
    • partial
  • a total lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, earth and moon are precisely aligned and the moon passes into the shadow of the earth. in other words, EARTH IS PREVENTING SUNLIGHT FROM REACHING THE MOON.
  • a partial lunar eclipse happens when only part of the moon enters the earths shadow, which may look like it is having a "bite" (BITE ME BY ENHYPEN) out of the lunar surface. earths shadow will appear dark on the side of the moon facing earth.
  • a penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the moon travels only through the outer, fainter part of the earths shadow, or PENUMBRA
  • what eclipse is this? solar eclipse
  • what shadow is these two?
    A) umbra
    B) penumbra
  • what eclipse is this? lunar eclipse
